Well, after months without a pet, since our 13 year old dog Roxy died back in September, we have a new addition to the family. Meet Oreo.

I’ve never been much of a cat person having been raised with dogs all my life but I don’t mind cats too much. Correction: We had a cat once when I was in high school but it was an outside cat that never came inside, and I don’t remember us having it too long either.

At first, I protested us acquiring a cat since I didn’t think we were ready for a new pet but since meeting the cute little bugger I gave in. She’s been a delightful distraction from the stress of life.

Here’s a HD video of little miss Oreo I took with my new Flip UltraHD:

Today is New Years Eve and I can’t tell you enough how happy I am the year 2009 is almost over. Be warned that this post will be negative and a little morbid.

The year 2009 was the worst year ever in my 38 years of living, and I am not exaggerating. Here are just a few things that happened that really made the year pretty horrible: First, the economy sucked so bad that the company I worked for was forced to reduce the hours for all employees, which meant for me that I lost a month of pay spread out over the year. Second, there were a lot of deaths this past year. Along with the numerous celebrity deaths that occurred, I lost my 13 year dog, Roxy, at the end of September then my Grandmother two weeks later. In addition there were quite a few personal issues in my household that made the year pretty stressful.

But, I can say that there are positives from these tragedies. First, at least I had a job. I have known quite a few people who were unemployed for most of 2009, so I am fortunate to have been employed. Second, even though I will miss my dog and my grandmother, I know that they are not suffering any longer and are in a better place. Finally, I have good health, all my limbs are in good working order and I have a roof over my head. God has been good to me and my family and I don’t take that for granted. I thank Him everyday for all that He has done for me.

Even though the year 2009 was pretty horrible, I am optimistic about 2010 and I look forward to the future and all the adventures it brings.

Happy New Year!

I’ve been on this project for the past three years that involves getting rid of stuff to free up space. It first started out with selling my comic book collection. I had over 3000 comics in 14 long boxes that took up a lot of (needed) space. If you have never seen long comic book boxes then you should at least know that having 14 of these easily filled up a closet, and then some.
Next, a little over a year ago, I finished transferring all my CDs to my computer hard drive (with backups, of course). I had already been in the process of doing this for the past 10 years. Every time I bought a new CD I would transfer it to my computer so that I could listen to my music without having to grab a CD and inserting it into my CD-ROM. Well, since buying a iPod about three years ago and using it in my vehicle, I realized thereafter that I never touched any of my CDs, they were just taking up space and collecting dust. So I finished transferring the rest of my collection to my computer last year, boxed up all my CDs and went to the local buy/trade CD store and sold my collection for a decent amount. Problem solved. A 300 plus CD collection was no longer taking up space. Now, when I want music I just go to the MP3 download section of Amazon, buy and download the files straight to my music library on my computer.
And now my next two task is getting rid of all my books and DVDs. I have a pretty hefty book collection and easily over 250 DVDs. I had already started stacking books I have read that I know I will never read again to sell either on Amazon or at my next yard sale but I decided yesterday that I should just donate them since there is no telling how long it will take me sell them; they’ve already been sitting in a stack on the floor for the past couple of months collecting dust, I need the space. All the other books that I have not read I may attempt to sell on Amazon. One thing I failed to realize is that there is a such thing as a library. I haven’t been to a library in over 15 years but there is one near my house that I can visit anytime I want to read a book; I’ll let them store the books for me. As far as my DVD collection’s future, I figure I will try to sell them on Amazon or to friends and family (my collection is on the right if you are interested in buying). I’ve spent far too much money on them to just donate them.
With movies and music, the rise of online digital media has become so easily available there is really no need for physical ownership any longer; I honestly believe this is the future. Slowly, it is becoming the same for books. Services like Netflix and Amazon Unbox for movies, iTunes and Amazon for music download, and now Amazon’s Kindle, along with other electronic book readers, are so much easier to access these days with the increase of internet bandwidth (I’m clocking 30Mbps down and 1.8Mps up now). The only thing I need to worry about is hard drive storage and backup. But, with the price of hard drives so affordable these days there are no worries there.
Hopefully, within the next year or so, the only thing in my bedroom will be my bed, my TV, my desk and computer surrounded by hard drives with all my media in digital format.

I want the world to know that I’ve been a Journey fan for about 25 years now and have listened to their music non-stop since then. So, when all these youngsters start listening to Journey and make it a trend or something (it could happen), I never stopped believin’.

Of course, Journey isn’t Journey without Steve Perry.

Well, this is it. I’ve kept quiet for long enough that I can’t keep it in any longer. This will be the first time I have revealed this secret to anyone. My family nor any of my friends have been informed of my secret search and finding. Since mostly my friends and family are the only ones who read my blog, I thought I would let the secret out publicly to everyone.

As most of my close friends and family know, I have been wanting to move out of Florida for a few years. I’m a native Floridian of 38 years and have felt it time to see a change of scenery outside the southeast. Since 2003, I have been visiting one of my friends in Brooklyn at least twice a year, so for the past two years or so I have had the intention of moving to New York. Well, that has changed.

More information that my friends and family know is that I was unemployed for a few months last summer. During that time, toward the end of my severance, I began submitting my resume to companies outside of Florida; again, something I kept private. Some of those companies I submitted my resume to were located in California. San Francisco and the Los Angeles area were two other city choices I wanted to move to outside of New York. Well, after more than 6 months, and two jobs later, I finally got a bite from a company outside of San Francisco recently. I got a call from an HR recruiter from this company a few days ago and we both have exchange emails and phone calls since then trying to arrange interviews. I had my phone interview last Friday with the recruiter and another HR person. The phone interview must have gone pretty well, even though I was nervous and felt it didn’t go so well. I got an email late last night from the recruiter stating that he wanted to schedule a face-to-face interview next week. I don’t know the details completely yet but I will be flying to San Francisco for a couple of days, maybe more, for the interview, all expenses paid by the company.

I don’t know about you but this sounds extremely promising to me if they are paying for the trip for the interview. What is even better is that I have the week off from work next week. Perfect timing. I’m super excited. This is something I have been hoping and praying would come along for the past two years. I haven’t told my roommate yet, and I know she doesn’t read my blog, so I will be informing her tonight. It should be an interesting conversation.

I hope to be speaking more with HR today on the exact details of the trip and interview.

Happy April Fools Day!

I’ve been reliving my childhood for quite sometime thanks to Netflix. For the past couple of years or so I’ve been renting 80′s shows like Miami Vice, The Greatest American Hero, and V: The Series. Some of those shows are really bad and I ask myself while re-watching them how I could have watched a show like that at the time. I just finished watching season 2 of Amazing Stories via the Netflix streaming and have thoroughly enjoyed it though. That entire series was just plain awesome. Yeah, there were a few cheesy episodes that only the 80′s could produce but overall the series still held up to today.
Check out this tubular promo I found on You Tube that will definitely flood you with nostalgia.

While I was watching the final season (unfortunately, Amazing Stories only lasted two seasons) it reminded me of another 80′s series of the same genre I had to checkout, the 80′s version of The Twilight Zone. Remember this?

It was one of my favorite shows at the time; unfortunately, Netflix only has season 1, so far. I remember during those years looking forward to Friday nights when this show used to air. Mom would usually just arrive home from the supermarket just before the episode would start which would ensure tasty treats and soda pop while I watched a thrilling episode. It was a magical time that produced wonderful memories today. I’m about halfway through the season and I am enjoying it all over again.

I just finished watching a pretty good episode I had to post on Vimeo. If you remember watching the show, it was an hour long but would have either two 20 minute episodes or sometimes one really long episode with a really short episode to help fill up the hour long slot. The video I posted is one of those short ones lasting only 8 minutes or so. It’s actually an episode I don’t remember seeing when it originally aired but really enjoyed watching this time around. It stars Sherman Hemsley and a very young Ron Glass. I think the main reason why I enjoyed this episode so much was the message it delivered at the very end. It’s witty but very true.

I hope Vimeo doesn’t pull it so try to watch it as soon as you can. Enjoy!

*Note: Pay attention to the Devil’s t-shirt throughout the episode.

There hasn’t been a whole lot going on lately with my life, so this will be a short one.

I realized recently that I didn’t post about the new podcast that I participate in, and sometimes host, called Technical Difficulties. It’s a spin-off podcast of The Unique Geek podcast, another podcast I used to, and still on occasion, participate in. Technical Difficulties podcast usually revolves around recent tech news, but we also include a couple of segments for all listeners. The specific segments entitled Tech Breakdown and Tech Tip are usually on subjects where we explain certain technologies for the technically impaired and tips to help you survive this digital age.

So, please, go check us out at: http://www.techdiffpodcast.com/ You can either listen or download the episodes from our site or directly from iTunes.

Here is the most recent episode for your listening enjoyment, but please check out our site too:

Also, I just added a plugin to the site so that you can now subscribe to comments. Which means if you leave a comment on a post and select subscribe, you will receive an email notification when someone else post a comment thereafter. I’ve mentioned this before in previous post, but I still have the plugin enabled for leaving audio or video comments. So please don’t be afraid to leave me a audio or video comment.

The year of 2008 was one of the best years I have had in a long time. The reason I state that is because it has been, for the most part, full of excitement. I will admit that the first part of the year was dull; the excitement didn’t actually start until I was released from the company I had been with for over five years. It was just after that when I started a very exciting summer full of trips and thereafter a prosperous autumn.

It began as a trip to New York to act in an off-Broadway play. You can see the entries of those exciting times from archives of the month of July here, here, and here.

Immediately after that, at the end of the month of July, I made a trip to Richmond, VA and Washington D.C.
Then, only a couple weeks later, I made another trip to New York for some leisure time to enjoy the city and some of the tourist areas I had never visited.

Once I returned from my second New York trip is when I resumed my career at a new job working for IBM at Disney’s data center. It was only a couple of months before I realized that job was not suited for me.
The remaining year was filled with new tech gadgets, catching up with old friends after making a trip to Tampa for Halloween (pictures here and here) and a trip to Tallahassee for a FSU football game (picture here and here), and then, of course, the holidays.

It seemed halting my career in the first half of the year was a life changing event. Since then I’ve started a second job that has already proven unstable, so there is no telling what 2009 will hold. I hope 2009 is just as adventurous but a little more stable. It is true what some state though, that chaos is exciting and 2008 sure was an unstable and fun year for me.

I hope your 2009 is just as exciting and more prosperous than my 2008.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I don’t normally like to blog about work but what happened today shouldn’t go unmentioned.

We all have been hearing about corporate layoffs around the country for the past month or so now; companies like Sun Microsystems laying off 6,000, Palm laying off over 1,000, AT&T laying off 12,000, and Yahoo laying off over 1,500. Well the company I work for can be added to the list. I’m not sure how many total employees were laid off, I just know that my entire team was let go today, except for me. I’m really bummed about it being that I am the only single male without a wife and children that was left with a job in my team. Another reason is because these guys I have been working with had been with the company for almost two years or more and know more about the environment, so you would think that I would be the one they cut, but that wasn’t the case. Apparently, the order was the last to hire was the first to fire. See, the other guys had been contractors since their inception into the company. When they hired me in October, I was hired as a full time exempt employee, whereas they were hired as full time exempt employees a week after I started. It’s something that I don’t completely understand but I have to find the grateful attitude somehow. It’s tough to see the brighter side of it and to be grateful when these other guys that have spent the past two months training me on the procedures of the company were released and I was not.

I guess you can say this is definitely the sign of the times and my time may not be far behind…again (*see Unemployment post). If things do not get better in the economy you, the reader, may be next also. I’m just saying is that we may not see the end of these woes for a long time.

The recommendation I can give to you is pray more, save, keep your resume updated, and your mind open to changes.

As we all know, today is Thanksgiving. I want to wish everyone and their family a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.

Unfortunately for me, I will be spending it in bed this year. I’ve been sick with a cold since last Friday however, since Monday, I have gotten worse; I may have the flu. Even though the health benefits at the new job do not kick in until after the first of the year, I had no choice but to call in sick on Tuesday and Wednesday. I was even supposed to drive up to St. Augustine Wednesday evening to be with the family for Thanksgiving day then drive to Alabama to be with my Grandma on Friday and Saturday but I just couldn’t get healthy enough quickly enough.

However, despite this current grief, I have so much to thank God for. I may be sick now but I still am in good health. We may be in an economic downslope but I have a job. I have a loving family and good friends. And I have so much more. Like I stated, I have a lot to be thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I wasn’t happy with the job, nor enjoyed the 45 minute trek to the site, nor the night shift I was scheduled. So, I interviewed with a company called The Fund (http://www.thefund.com), they hired me and I gave my two weeks notice to IBM. There are a lot more reasons for quitting IBM but I won’t bore you.

My first day at The Fund starts next week so hopefully everything will work out for me there. One of the best things about this companies location is that it is only 5 miles away from where I live and no tolls. I was spending close to $10 a week on tolls alone traveling to the Disney site.

Pray and wish me luck that I will be as happy as I was at The Ginn Company.

Today was nothing exciting as it was, mostly, orientation day. I spent most of the day in a conference room going over the details of working for IBM and The Walt Disney Company.

Tomorrow is a continuation, if Tropical Storm Fay lets us work. I may not start getting my hands dirty on servers until later this week.

I’m excited.

It’s 5:00 in the morning now as I type this having been awake for the past two hours. I have these phases quite often so it’s nothing new to me. Sometimes I go back to sleep, and sometimes I don’t. It’s one of those quirks in life for me. Most of the time, during these phases, I just read whatever book I am working on to help me go back to sleep. But this morning, while trying to go back to sleep, I had some things on my mind. Sometimes they can be some pretty strange thoughts, which can easily happen when you are delirious.

One was the thought of the month of August. First of all, how it was already here. It’s really true what they say about getting older, how time disappears. It seems just like yesterday I was celebrating Christmas with my family. It’s hard to believe that fall and college football is just around the corner (Thank God!). Second thought – and this is the strange one – was how worthless the month of August is. Really. I was thinking, for me, there is absolutely nothing special about August. No holidays, no birthdays of friends or family, no good summer movies since most of them are released between April and the end of July, and it’s always hotter than hell. I wish there was a way to get rid of August and make the summer shorter so that the cooler months (and college football) could get here sooner. I’m sure as a child I would have a different sentiment since that would mean school would arrive sooner but as an adult who hates summers in Florida, and has more to look forward to in the fall, I absolutely hate August.

What’s your opinion? Don’t you agree that August is the worst month of the twelve? Which month do you hate, if not, and why?

At the spur of the moment, my cousin and I went to Washington D.C. today. I honestly did not realize how close our nations capital was from Richmond. He doesn’t live in Richmond, just west of it, so it was about a 2 1/2 hour drive. Literally, at 6:00 a.m. this morning we decided to drive to D.C. for the day.

We parked in the Ronald Reagan building and immediately walked to The Washington Monument a couple blocks down the road. From there, we did the whole, what I call, American circle, that involved The Lincoln Memorial, The White House and then The Capital Building, with a couple of stops along the way.

Our last stop at the end of “the circle” was The Holocaust Memorial Museum. What an unbelievable memorial. If you are ever in the D.C. area, I highly recommend this exhibit. It is truly awesome.

Today was the last day of my five year tenure at The Ginn Company a.k.a. Ginn Clubs and Resorts.

Old Business Card

As some of you know, back in March I was informed by management that my job (Systems Engineer in the IT department), along with one other in my department and all of Help Desk, was going to be outsourced. I was given the date of June 27th as my last day of being a Ginn employee.

Well, I went into work today at my normal time, my boss followed an hour later and told me, as he passed my desk, that there really was no need to stay the rest of today or come back tomorrow, he was granting me the rest of the time off. He continued by offering his gratitude for my professionalism, hard work and dedication and finished with goodbyes. I then made my goodbye rounds to the rest of the office, seeing a few wet eyes along the way, and exited the building.

Even though tomorrow was supposed to be the beginnings of unemployment, I get an early start today to prepare. However, preparation is not on my agenda at this time. Monday morning I fly out to New York for my acting adventure (see previous post) and return on the 7th of July. It will then be on the 8th that I start sending out my resume and browsing the job sites for openings.

Thanks to Ginn, I have a severance that will hold me over for a few weeks until I can get back on my feet in the corporate world.

Wish me luck!

Yet, again, a post about my neighborhood. I took this picture this morning as I was exiting my subdivision on my way to work. It’s kind of menacing. It’s something you think you would see in a post-apocalyptic movie.

If you can’t tell what it is, it’s a vulture. A very large vulture. Along with the (previously mentioned) peacocks, otters, hawks, and raccoons, there is an abundance of vultures in my area. So much it has become a huge eyesore. Everyday it is not uncommon to see a flock of 15 or more of these large Turkey vultures congregated on the side of the road or up in the trees. I often wonder if it is because of the new housing and business developments that has been ongoing since I moved to this area four years ago. I would think because of this it drives all the animals out of their habitat into the streets and under the wheels of heavy traffic. It’s a constant buffet for the vultures.

Sadly, this vulture was eying a baby raccoon that met its demise in the road.

I took this picture of a lightning flash over my house with my little Canon SD450 point-and-shoot this evening. I was actually amazed that I could catch a flash without having a professional camera.

Of course, it took me, like, over 100 snaps before I could get a few good shots. I have a couple more over at my Flickr page.

It truly is an awesome thing to see.

To this day, though, I don’t recall ever hearing frogs get this loud and in such quantity. To hear it in person is, actually, quite chilling. Every time I hear this song I can’t help but think about the Stephen King short, Rainy Season.

So far, at my current residence, I have seen deer in my back yard, otters in the retention pond behind my house, a frequenting owl, the very occasional hawk, and the usual raccoon. Now I can add a real strange one to my list, peacocks.

I am no longer a virgin…at golf. My brother-in-law and his dad took me out to play golf in St. Augustine yesterday, it was my first time playing. I didn’t really know what I was doing so having those two around to give me pointers helped out tremendously. Before last fall, I never thought I would ever play golf.
Here’s the deal. I grew up in a house where golf is looked down on and the only real sport that really mattered was football, which is all well and good. I love football. However, being raised to, technically, hate golf I never had the ambition to really try it out. Well, last fall my brother-in-law introduced me to playing golf on the Wii. It’s nothing like the real golf but the basics and the motion of swinging the club are still present in the Wii virtual version of golf. This new experience gave me the bug to actually want to play the game. So, I decided to buy some clubs and take some lessons. A co-worker of mine so happen to be selling his clubs with a nice bag including golf balls and tees for $50. Sold! The next step was to take some lessons.
I found a place near where I work that offers a really good deal at lessons, I just haven’t gotten off of my lazy butt to take them yet. So, since I knew it would be a while before I would take lessons I decided to go ahead and try a game with these guys.
It was fun. I realize there is still a lot to learn but I still have the bug and want to get better at the game, which I realize will be a never ending battle. However, now that I have played gives me more incentive to take lessons. I’m signing up next week.

At 1:00 a.m. last night I woke up with chest pains, a familiar feeling I have experienced before. Immediately, I remembered I had fish for dinner. However, my past episodes of an allergic reaction to fish was only with tuna and salmon. I didn’t always have fish allergies, it took a long time after the first experience and many tests at the hospital, and some research of my own, before I realized I had an allergy.

I went to the kitchen, drank some water and chugged some Mylanta, hoping this would help. An hour went by and the pain did not go away and I started feeling nauseous with feelings of vomiting. This was new. In the past, I had some numbness in my hands and face along with a very severe acid reflux pain in my esophagus. I had the pain this time but no numbness.

I immediately started researching on the internet the fish I had for dinner, pollock. There were several sites, along with WebMD.com, that mentioned that pollock can affect some people.

Okay. That’s it. No more fish for me ever. Which sucks. I guess I should have researched it before I ate it.

After discovering this problem, I immediately woke up Chelby and told her to take me to the emergency room, thinking I was on my way toward anaphylactic shock. We got there just before 3:00 a.m. and waited to see the doctor, after checking in, for almost an hour and a half. Ridiculous. I failed to mention that on the way to the hospital that I was starting to feel loss of breath. By this time in the waiting room, it was getting worse and the nausea never left. I had mentioned this to the lady at the counter but it didn’t seem to rush things.

I finally saw the doctor. They put me on a EKG again, just in case there were heart issues being that I have those issues coming from my Mom’s side of the family. After they monitored this for a while, and my blood pressure, they eventual pumped me, via a needle in the arm, with Protonix, steroids and anti-histamine. The anti-histamine was enough to knock me out, which was perfect since they wanted to continue to monitor me.

They eventually released me around 7:30 a.m. and sent me home with prescriptions for my acid reflux, more steriods and more anti-histamine (Benadryl).

I stayed home from work today to recuperate. I’m feeling better now and so much more the wiser.

I got pulled over by FHP on my way home from a friend’s house this evening. Due to the recent time change, the sun had not completely set yet but was dusk when I left. I had turned my parking lights on but did not realize, until 40 minutes later, and after the FHP pulled me over, that I had never turned my lights on when it got dark. Also, the FHP claimed I was doing 70 mph; I didn’t realize that either. When he pulled me over it was a bit of a shock because, at the time, I didn’t realize I had done anything wrong. I was driving right behind someone else so when he pulled me I was wondering why I was the one to be picked IF I was speeding. I mentioned this to him after he stated that I was speeding but he said that the car in front of me was going 65 and that I was pulling up pretty fast to the car. During the trip to my house I was listening to a podcast so I must have really been in a zone that I was not paying attention to my driving.
Luckily, with both infractions, he didn’t charge me but gave me a warning. If he would have charged me for both, the ticket would have been over $400.

I was on my way in to work today and saw the funniest, natural thing I think I have ever seen. I believe a lot of it has to do with my imagination running away but it’s still funny.
Check out this photo closely (click):

It was taken at a small pond on the Celebration Golf Club green that was right next to the road. I noticed, in passing, the crowd of white birds on the right first; this, alone, was very distracting. Then, as I was traveling slowly down the road (since it is a residential area), I recognized that there was a crowd of different birds to the left facing the other birds. What is funnier that is not shown in this photo is at the time I first noticed the birds there were only two of the different birds in the middle facing each other at close range. The time of this photo snapshot took place about two minutes after my initial spotting of the congregation.
When I first saw this exhibition, I immediately imagined that there was some type of secret bird war about to take place in the early hours of the morning. Kind of like the scene in Braveheart where we see the English on one side and the Scottish on the other getting prepared for battle. However, in this scenario, we have some white birds, The White Streaks Clan, and some brown birds, The Brown Brawn Gang, getting ready for battle while their generals meet in the middle to discuss a possible surrender. The only thing that is missing is their shining armour and brandished swords.
It’s funny what you see in nature sometimes. It’s funnier what you can imagine when you are trying to keep your mind off of work on your way to work.

The year 2007 was a pretty good gaming year for me. It was the year that I finally owned a high end gaming computer and a Xbox 360.
I bought a Dell XPS machine last spring that proved to be a good buy. I was able to play, effectively, some high end games like Ghost Recon 2 Advanced Warfighter, Bioshock and Crysis. For Christmas, I received an Xbox 360, something I have been dreaming of for over a year. However, I was not able to fully enjoy it until this past weekend. I was (keyword, ‘was’) playing the Xbox on a 26 inch flat tube standard television. For those of you that have seen what a Xbox 360 game looks like on a standard definition – not high definition – television, you know the eye strain pain I was going through. So, having a little bit of extra money after the holidays, I decided to purchase a 37 inch Samsung HD LCD. I can see clearly now, the rain is gone. What a beautiful experience to play Assassin’s Creed in 720p HD on a 37 inch screen. The only word I can describe the experience is ‘breathtaking’.
Now with these two gaming machines at my disposal, I see 2008 as being a wonderful gaming year. Although, it may be non-productive.

The weather for Christmas in Central Florida SUCKS!
Year after year, since moving to Orlando, I find that it is very difficult to get into the Christmas spirit when it is constantly 80 degrees outside. It’s not fun sweating to death putting up Christmas lights, even though you’re in shorts and a t-shirt.
Last year was the first time in many a Christmas that I was in the spirit only because I had took a few days off from work at the beginning of December to visit my friend in Brooklyn. The weather then was perfect for Christmas. It was in the 50′s during the day and freezing at night. It was wonderful to get bundled up in a coat and (for the first time ever for myself) a scarf to go into the city to see the tree at Rockefeller Center and the decorated windows on 5th Avenue. That is the way fall and winter and, more importantly, Christmas is supposed to be.
I attended the horror convention Screamfest held in Orlando this past weekend. It was the first time I had attended the convention. I had every intention of attending last year but life got in the way and never went.
It was fun. My good friend, Simon, from New York joined me in the adventure of wading through people in all black. It was relatively a small convention. One small room for vendors, a tattoo room, a couple of rooms for panels and the film festival and a room for the stars that were selling their autograph. I was actually on a mission to get Stephen Geoffreys (Evil Ed from Fright Night) autograph but he never showed. Instead, I got Pinhead’s autograph, Doug Bradley from Hellraiser.
Despite it being a convention that I would not consider large scale, it was worth the $25 I spent on admission. I got to spend time with a friend, mingle with some friendly strangers , and happily ease further into the Halloween spirit.
Did I mention that I love Halloween?

I purchased a car today. It was something I desperately needed.
For the past couple of weeks I have been having issues with losing coolant in my 1998 Isuzu Rodeo. It was the worst time to start being an issue as I need to go on a road trip to Atlanta for Dragon*Con (a typical yearly adventure) at the beginning of September for Labor Day weekend. I took the Rodeo to the mechanics last weekend and the news was grim. They stated I had a cracked head (or was it a head gasket? I forget); a repair cost of more than $1000, possibly $2000.
Being that the car was so old and needed more than just repairs on the head, I decided it was time to trade it in.
Because of time restraints, as I was supposed to leave for my trip on Thursday, I decided to take today off to shop for a car. As soon as the local Carmax dealership was open at 10:00 am, I made my way toward it’s entrance. I had been browsing on their web site so I sort of knew what I wanted to look at immediately. As soon as I entered I told the salesman that I wanted to look at a grey 2006 Mazda 3 and a green 2003 Honda Accord LX. He first showed me the Mazda, which was nice but was not so good on gas mileage. He then directed me to the Honda which was love at first sight, and a perfect fit with the gas mileage.
We took it for a test drive and I knew even before the drive that I wanted that car. Everything was perfect about it. It had low mileage (30k), power windows, power locks, cruise control, the works. I didn’t need to look around any longer.
We worked on the financing, the trade-in for the Rodeo and all the paperwork to get me rolling home in the Honda.
Pictures are posted here:

Honda pictures

I was able to get a car in time for my trip tomorrow. Everything worked out well. I stressed over nothing.
Now I just need to get a iPod connector, like I had in my Rodeo, for the factory radio that I will be keeping.

For the upcoming The Simpsons movie, 7-Eleven decided to change a few stores around the country into a Kwik-E-Mart and sell items from the show. Items like: Buzz Cola, KrustyO’s, Squishees, and more. Orlando was lucky enough to get one of the twelve stores.
I visited this location yesterday and here are a few of the pictures I took with my Blackjack phone. Click on the images to see a bigger version.

Unfortunately, they were sold out of Buzz Cola. I’ll have to keep searching and post those photos later. It was mentioned a few months back that Duff Beer was going to be one of the items available for purchase also but I have since found out that it was decided not to sell it since the movie had a rating that was still geared toward children.

Update: 07/19/07 – I was finally able to find some Buzz cola. Actually, one of my friends found and bought it for me. Friends are awesome.

I’ve been in a lot of pain the past couple of days; tomorrow, hopefully, the dentist will rectify it.
A few months back my dentist told me that I needed a root canal on one of my rear molars. Well, because of the cost of a root canal and having crappy dental insurance, I didn’t have the $800 to get it done. But mainly because, like everyone, I hate dental work.
Well, I waited too long and am paying for it. The tooth has become abscessed and now I have no choice but to get a root canal to make the pain go away. Luckily, my dentist was able to get me in on Thursday morning to get the procedure taken care of. In the meantime, I’ve been doped up on 500mg of a generic hydrocodone to ease the pain.
No other time have I ever looked forward to a dentist visit as I do now. The pain has been so bad, I’ve even been tempted to grab some pliers and pull the damn tooth out myself.

It shocking to see the rise in price of the theme parks these days. I’ve lived in the City of Theme Parks for many years now and have watched the steady climb in admission to the parks. It wasn’t long ago that I remember that a fun filled day at Disney’s MGM Studios was less than $55. Now, they will not allow you entry, if you live outside of the state of Florida, for less than $65. It cost $67 now for non-Florida residents. Almost $70! I’m sorry but I think that is just outrageous.
Even so, we still pay, and those companies that offer that entertainment know that we will pay, no matter the cost. I bet that if they charged $85, the majority of the world would still pay to see what the theme park companies have to offer.
But, I have to say, despite the ridiculous price, they know how to sell fun.
Yesterday, some visiting friends of mine spent a good 12 hours of park hoping Walt Disney World. It was a blast. We first started at Animal Kingdom, rode a couple of rides, saw some exotic animals, and left for MGM Studios. While at MGM Studios, we rode more rides, watched a street improv show, took a wacky Star Wars picture of ourselves, then left for EPCOT. Since the day was waning quickly, we only had time to watch the spectacular fireworks show at EPCOT before it closed. From EPCOT, we hopped on a monorail and headed for the Magic Kingdom, being the only park that stayed open the latest – it closed at midnight. Many rides were ridden in our two hour stay and ended with many points scored on the Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, and a small dent in the credit card.
Yet I realize, while typing this, that its not just fun that is sold at these parks; its also memories. Its these treasures that can’t be sold or stolen from us. Its these treasures that we lock up and store in the back of our mind to pull out and gaze at, subconsciously, again in 5, 20, even 50 years down the road to place smiles on our faces again and again at the times that we may need it the most.

A funny thing happened to me while at work today that caused me to, eventually, leave for home early with a red face.
My usual day at the office incorporates many bottles of water, which, in turns, incorporates many trips to the restroom. The first visit, today, proved some difficulty in pulling the zipper back up on my pants. The second resulted in a peculiar sound that made me cringe, a sort of ripping sound. The third visit revealed my speculation of a possible defective zipper by creating a stopping point toward the top and resistance to proceed. This occurred just before a meeting in which I was made the center of attention from my dilemma.
After the 1 hour plus meeting, and after the consumption of two bottles of water before the meeting, I had to go to the restroom again. This next visit I knew would be the end of my zipper, but I had no choice. Sure enough, on its way down this time the inevitable happened, no more reverse, no more zipper. I untucked my shirt, exited the bathroom and prepared my things for my trip home.
However, my departure, with my laptop bag hiding the opening of my pants, was not without incident. As I was entering my car in front of the building, I began to smell smoke. I looked on the other side of my car and noticed the smoke at the edge of the parking lot about two cars over; at about the same time I noticed a female exiting the building to satisfy her nicotine fix in the smoking area just a few paces from where the smoke was wafting. Daringly, I decided to check out the smoke, noticing, as I approached, there was, indeed, a small fire. I then performed my good deed for the day and began stomping out the fire, keeping my body bent forward so that my untucked shirt would cover the “love cave”, hoping the “fire-breathing lady” would not notice the opening. She did, however, notice my mash potato dance and, I guess, she figured she wanted to dance also. As she walked over, I leaned over some more acting as if I was looking for the source of the fire. She must have heard the words “Simon Says” because she proceeded to look also. We didn’t find anything and, to my amazement, she turned away to walk back to her “smoke den” mumbling something about irresponsible people and their cigarettes. I walked back to my car, the whole time looking like Quasimodo, and drove away.
It’s scenarios like this that led to me wonder what I would do if I lived in a major metropolitan area, like New York City, where I would have to rely on mass transportation and not the luxury of my own personal car that I can hide away in. Hopefully, if I ever make there, I will never find out.

[iTunes was playing "Creating "Governing Dynamics"" by James Horner from A Beautiful Mind soundtrack while I was writing this.]

Today was a very unusual day in Central Florida, weather wise. A cold front moved in so fast that is was extremely nasty and rainy in the morning then turned practically cloudless and beautiful by 2:00 p.m. It was truly gorgeous. A day that I dream could be the typical day in Central Florida every day of the year. 75 degrees, sunny with a nice, cool wind and no humidity.
Since the weather was so wonderful, my roommate and I decided to hang out at Disney’s Animal Kingdom for the afternoon. As many times as I have been there, it never gets old. I am continually amazed at the wild life Disney is able to keep at the park. But remember, it’s “notazoo”
Some pictures from the park. The first three were taken with my Samsung Blackjack as a straight upload to Tumblr.

I don’t know what has happened to me but recently I got into the mood to attempt writing again. I finally finished a short story that I had been working on for the past year and now I am working on a screenplay. I hope this continues and I do not get distracted, I want to finish this screenplay.

I downloaded and installed an application for Mac called Montage that assist in writing. It has so many cool features for it that include templates for stage plays, film and television and different tools that help you shape the script that include story and scene outlines, character bios, and more. And, the best part about it is that it’s only $140; I’m using the 30 trial version now. Since I am enjoying it so much I will more than likely buy the product. Check me out…I sound like a commercial.

I’m trying to figure out where this motivation to write came from. Believe it or not, this actually occurs every few years or so for me. I’ve experienced this before, however, the phase doesn’t usually last. I believe this time around I can attribute this to many factors.

I’ve also been in a Stephen King phase in that recently I just purchased and started reading a few older books of his that I have not read yet. And, I guess, while reading his stories I realize that he does it so well that he makes it look easy. So, that could be one factor. Also, a friend of mine started a web site called New Bard’s Press in which anyone can publish a story to his site for the world to read…all for free. I have a few things published there and, I guess, seeing the community grow on the site can also be another factor in my motivation.

Whatever the case, or cases, may be, I hope it continues for a long time as it is still a skill that I really need to focus on more and improve as I really enjoy it.

I watched the Academy Awards Sunday night, which is the only awards show I watch and enjoy, and was happy to see that Ennio Morricone finally received a tribute from the Academy. I’ve been a fan of his work since the day I first watched A Fistful of Dollars with my Dad when I was about twelve years old. However, I felt the tribute was trashed as soon as they mentioned that Celine Dion was going to sing one of his songs. The happy feeling I felt inside knowing that Ennio Morricone was going to be recognized immediately changed to disgust and dread. Why Celine Dion? Couldn’t they have chosen someone else? Why did it have to be a vocal performance? I think it would have been so much better if the orchestra had played a medley of his most popular themes throughout his career with clips from the movies those themes were from.
If you are a fan of Ennio Morricone and enjoy mixes I highly recommend Morricone RMX.

The Christmas holiday is over and I’m broke, yet again, from all the giving of…money, but not from buying so much for friends and relatives, this time it’s different.

Last Wednesday, just a two days after Christmas, on my way home from work I noticed my ABS light illuminate. No big deal, huh. I just thought I would wait until the weekend and take it into Sears to get my brakes checked. Well, it didn’t work out so easily.

The following day on my way into work, I had to pick up my boss from the dealership because his Check Engine light came on. Well, ironically, on my way to pick him up, my Check Engine light came on as well. So, with this new addition, I started to get a little worried. I still proceeded to pick him up and we both went into work.

At the end of the day, I decided that when I drop off my boss to pick up his car that I would drop off my car at Sears so they could do a diagnostics and then let him take me home. But it wasn’t that easy. As soon as I dropped him off and was on our way to Sears – which was only a few miles down from his dealership – my car began to run hot and accelerated sluggishly. I turned on the fan, this seemed to help. As I was pulling into Sears is when the overheating got worse. When I stopped and turned off the engine, I popped the hood, to look to see where the smoke was coming from that I had briefly saw on my way over, and noticed that my battery was the culprit.

To make a longer story short, Sears could not diagnose the engine to see why the Check Engine light or ABS light was on, but they could check the battery and the alternator. They came to the conclusion that my alternator was bad, was putting out too much voltage to the battery and blew the battery, so much that it blew the caps off. There goes $500 to Sears and a day out of work on Friday.

Well, after picking it up from Sears Saturday morning, the fun did not stop, my car was still not fixed. The Check Engine light was still on and the engine was still sluggish. I took it back to Sears and they stated that they could not do anything more to find out the issue. So, by one of the mechanics recommendation, I took it to Pep Boys around the corner (which is probably where I should have taken it in the first place) for them to find out what was wrong. First thing, $100 would be out of pocket just for them to diagnose the engine to find out why the Check Engine light was on. After they checked it, they found that my ignition coil and some plugs were bad. Grand total for them to fix it – $690.

So, now I am $1200 dollars poorer without the satisfaction of holiday giving.

Some co-workers and I went to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Orlando last night, it was a blast. Even though it was extremely busy with 90 degree temperature and 100% humidity, we still managed to have fun.

The longest we had to wait for a house was a little over an hour. The negative thing about this hour wait, besides it being an hour wait, is that once we got into the house for the walkthrough it only lasted about 10 minutes. I believe the issues with Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) now is that it has gotten so popular that it’s tough to go to it without waiting in a queue for a haunted house for more than an hour. I remember about 10 years ago, before moving to Orlando, that going to HHN on a weeknight would asure you would not have to wait in a queue for more than 15 minutes.

The houses were pretty cool and the theme of each was oustanding. This year was a little different in that while you were waiting in queue, you could watch clips of horror movies projected on the wall. This seemed to add a little something to the theme of each house. For example, one of the houses we went to was called People Under the Stairs Under Construction. While we were in line, we were entertained with the view of quite a few clips from the, now classic, film, People Under the Stairs. An added bonus to the walkthrough of the house was that they gave you hard hats with flashlights mounted on top to wear to help through the really dark areas. What they failed to mention was that this flashlight would sometimes stop beaming it’s light or act like the battery was going bad and just flash. This added to the surprise of not knowing what was around the corner.

The Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure Show was just as good as it had been previous years, it remains a legend. Other than that show and the houses, there wasn’t a whole lot more to do there, which was fine since we didn’t have time to check out all of the houses because of the crowd and long queues. The only ride that we noticed was open was The Revenge of the Mummy rollercoaster. This was the first time I had experienced it and it wasn’t bad, short, but not bad.

If I get a chance to go next year, my goal is to try to go to HHN the first week it opens in hopes that it is not as crowded versus a visit closer to Halloween.

Out of no where the pain comes. Around 2:00 yesterday I started feeling a very familiar pain in my esophagus due to acid reflux. It’s not often that I feel this pain but it is a very sharp, throbbing pain as if someone is stabbing you with a knife, only it’s from the inside digging out. Before, I’ve been able to take either Alka-Seltzer or one of my acid reflux pills and it would go away within the hour, meanwhile I am in agony until it subsides. However, the pain I felt yesterday was unlike anything I have ever felt, I was in tears. After about 15 minutes of this pain getting worse I said to myself that the only thing that may help me now is an emergency room, luckily there was one just around the corner from my office.

I stepped into my manager’s office and stated “I need someone to take me to the emergency room.” He sat and looked at me in disbelief for a second and asked “Really?” Of course, I said “Yes, really.” We immediately rushed to his car and he drove me around the corner to the hospital. I walked straight to the counter, told them I was having pains in my chest and they immediately took me to a room behind the counter where they proceeded to test me for any heart problems. They put all these little tabs all over my body, which I can only assume was for EKG, and tested my blood pressure and, while in MAJOR pain, asked me questions about myself that I could only reply with short answers in between breaths, all the while the nurse was telling me to regulate my breathing.

When the test were all done and everything came out okay in the heart area they sent me to the reception area to wait until they could find a more permanant room to put me in, while I am still in MAJOR pain. It’s interesting to state that it seemed the pain got worse while I was at the hospital, it was a good thing I decided to go to the hospital when I did.

After about 10 minutes of waiting, they finally escorted me, and my manager, to a room. It was then that I noticed that my ears and mouth area were starting to tingle and getting numb. They laid me down on a bed and put me on more machines and a IV. After this is when it started to become a blur. I remember my mouth and ears were totally numb and mentioning this to the nurse didn’t seem important to them. After a few minutes the doctor came in and asked me more questions, mostly about heart issues, eating habits and medication I was taking. He stated, before he left, that they were going to take blood to see if there was anything they could get from the test. Before he stepped out, I again mentioned to him that my ears and mouth area were unusually numb, he didn’t really seemed concerned. Remember, through all of this I am still in some MAJOR pain.

About 5 minutes after the doctor left, if was then I realized that it wasn’t necessary for Thomas, my manager, to stick around. He had already called Chelby (my roommate and best friend of almost 15 years) for me and the test would take approximately 1 hour. Just before he left, a nurse came in and gave me a liquid to drink, she stated this would numb the pain. It did. This was a relief. Thomas left and the nurse put something in my IV that made me drowsy. Before I knew it, I was out, like a light.

From this point forward it was all a complete blur. I, somewhat, remember the doctor coming in to tell me that the test didn’t show anything abnormal, especially with the heart, and that what it all seemed to be was an extreme case of acid reflux. I never knew acid reflux could be so painful. I then, under a minor stupor, asked him again about the numbness around the ears and mouth, he stated that it was due to me hyperventilating from the pain. But, even at this moment, being the next day, I still have some minor sensations of numbness in my lips and ears.

I was pretty much in and out of sleep until I waited for the nurse to come pull me from all the machines and the IV. The drink I had totally did the job of numbing the pain. After she unplugged me, she escorted me to the reception area while I waited for Chelby to come pick me up (she had been in Melbourne for the day visiting her sister and nephew).

The rest of the night I was completely out. Chelby drove me home, I changed, took some of my acid reflux medicine and passed out in my bed for the rest of the night. This was around 7:00pm.

I can tell you now, after that experience yesterday, I am so fearful of eating and drinking anything at all, or even taking any of my medication that I had been taking this week. I had a root canal on Monday so I had started taking the prescribed penisillin Tuesday night and Wednesday along with the ocassional codine pills for the pain. I’ve been questioning since this incident if the combination of penisillin and the lemonade drinks I had on Wednesday may have caused the extreme reaction. I will be calling my doctor today for an appiontment to start the investigation. If I can at all help it, I don’t want to feel that pain ever again.

I know this is a late entry but I just now got the blog site up and running. Last week (almost two weeks now), I flew to The Bahamas on the company plane to our property on Grand Bahama Island at the West End. The reason for my visit was to install and setup some servers for one of our offices in Freeport. When I got back, a sort through my snail mail revealed an envelope from my sister.
When I opened this envelope a very nice surprise almost fell out onto my lap. The contents included various size pictures of my niece, Sierra, and my nephew, Gage, and pictures of the family. Also included was a separate envelope from Sierra that included some artwork of hers on the front and back of the envelope and inside.
I have to tell you, after the week I had, receiving this envelope from my sister and, more specifically, my niece made my exhausting week seem so worth it just to get to that point. Words cannot describe how happy it made me feel to see those pictures and a “correspondence” from Sierra.
Yes, these days, email is the most common form of communication among family and friends but snail mail like that has a more personal feel to it that touches the senses so much more. It’s more personal, don’t you think?
For those of you who really know me are probably thinking, “Ed? Prefers snail mail?” Well, yes, but only if it’s mail like that. I may be a tech geek however I realize a greeting card, or personalized mail from a 4 year old, will never be substituted.

It’s a growing trend that started a long time back. You’ll have to look up the wiki to read the definition and history of what a blog is. I’m still learning myself. It really has been a fascination of mine for over a year. Well, as you can see, the fascination has turned into an action.

I don’t plan on making this site just a blog, I also plan on adding other media for my friends and family to view, like photos and video. It’s what this site was dedicated to in the past so I will resume it’s function.
